LEON HIGH HISTORY
The year 1871, six years after the War Between the States, twenty-six years after Florida became a state, Leon High was founded. It was five years later when a two-story building was erected on the present site of Hobbs Federal Building along Tennessee Street. This facility was used until a new building was erected in 1911. This structure was located behind the current Chamber of Commerce Building on Park Avenue. Growth dictated another new facility in 1936. There was much criticism about the three-story structure that houses Leon today. Many townspeople thought it so large that it would never be more than half full. The third structure weathered the criticism and has served the community well.
Leon is Florida's oldest continually accredited high school. It is among the state's leaders in National Merit Scholars and SAT scores. Leon has trained some of Florida's most prominent citizens such as former governors, congressmen, senators, lawyers, doctors and even an Academy Award winner. Leon is part of Tallahassees history.
It is this legacy and tradition that we want every Leon student to feel. Once you have walked these hallowed halls, you are part of its story. Our pride is based on tradition of excellence!
